INTRODUCTION
Records of the Friends Committee on National Legislation and the National Council Against Conscription. The collection contains pamphlets, memos, newsletters, and resolutions and statements against conscription.
DONOR INFORMATION
The Joe Dunn Collection was donated to the University of Missouri by Joe Dunn after completing his history dissertation at the university on 25 June 1973 (Accession No. 3917).
ORGANIZATIONAL SKETCH
The Friends (Quakers) Committee on National Legislation and the National Council Against Conscription were two of several organizations throughout the country opposed to universal military training (UMT) and universal military service (UMS). They tried, and failed, to abolish peacetime conscription and the draft of teenagers in the United States in the aftermath of World War II.
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
The Joe Dunn Collection consists of pamphlets, memos, newsletters, and resolutions and statements against mandatory draft. They document the efforts of the Friends Committee and the National Council Against Conscription to end peacetime conscription. The collection is arranged into two sections:
The Friends Committee on National Legislation section comprises memos, action sheets, newsletters, and other material documenting their legislative efforts. This section is arranged alphabetically.
The National Council Against Conscription section contains numerous pamphlets published by the group and is arranged chronologically. They are a good example of the anti-militaristic sentiment existing immediately after World War II.
Also included are pamphlets published by other groups regarding this issue including religious organizations and the Department of Defense.
