Missouri. Scrapbooks contain newspaper clippings relating to the history of Missouri and Texas, and obituaries of prominent Missourians.
DONOR INFORMATION
The Garland Carr Broadhead Papers were donated to the State Historical Society of Missouri by Mr. Broadhead in 1909. Additional papers were donated by the Friends of the Library on 16 September 1983 (SHS Accession No. 2490) and by Howard Marshall on 14 June 1988 (SHS
Accession No. 2695). One folder of material was donated to the University of Missouri by Mrs. Helen Gohres on 14 October 1977 (Accession No. 4110).
BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH
Garland Carr Broadhead was born 30 October 1827 in Albermarle County, Virginia, to Achilles and Mary Winston (Carr) Broadhead. Around 1836 the family moved to St. Charles County, Missouri, where Achilles became a farmer and part-time judge.
Educated at home, Broadhead was well-read in history, mathematics, Latin, and Greek by the time he was 17. At age 20 he began teaching
at a local common school, while continuing his own education part-time at the University of Missouri and the Western Military Institute in Duncan, Kentucky.
Trained in civil engineering, G. C. Broadhead became interested in geology and mineralogy while surveying for the Missouri Pacific Railroad (1852-1857 and 1864-1866). His studies with the railroad proved so extensive that his services as a geologist were in great demand. He served as assistant geologist for the state of Missouri from 1857 to 1861, and in 1873 was appointed state geologist for a two year term.
As one of the leading authorities on midwestern mineral and ore deposits, Broadhead was asked in 1875 to begin collecting mineral samples and fossils for the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., and the U.S. Centennial Exposition to be held in Philadelphia the following year. At the exposition Broadhead was a member of the board of jurors which awarded prizes in mineralogy and geology. In 1887 he joined the faculty of the University of Missouri as professor of geology and mineralogy, a position he held for ten years.
In addition to these duties Broadhead wrote and edited a number of books and articles on the geology, geography, and history of Missouri,
including geological surveys of Missouri (1874) and Illinois (1875), and a treatise on Indian trails and traces (1902).
Garland Carr Broadhead was married in December 1864 to Marian Wallace Wright, who died in November 1883. The couple had five children, one of whom died in infancy. In June 1890 Broadhead married Victoria Regina Royall. He died in Columbia on 15 December 1912.
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
The Garland Carr Broadhead Papers are arranged into three series:
The Correspondence is arranged chronologically, with only a few items dated before 1871. The correspondence relates almost entirely to Broadhead's work as geologist and civil engineer. Early correspondence deals with survey work done in Kansas, Arkansas, and southwestern Missouri, and is mostly from other geologists wishing to compare their findings with Broadhead's. There is also discussion about, and thank yous for, various books edited by Broadhead at this time, including the Geological Report of Missouri (1874).
Correspondence from the mid- to late 1870s touches on Broadhead's dealings with the Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C., and the
U. S. Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia, as well as various geological surveys being conducted in Missouri and Kansas.
The 1880s and 1890s see a shift from mineralogy to geography and history. Particular topics include Broadhead's 1887 appointment to
the University of Missouri's Department of Geology and Mineralogy, the 1892 fire that destroyed the University's Academic Hall, and the 1893 Columbian Exposition held in Chicago. Later correspondence deals with Broadhead's dismissal from the University in 1897, the Louisiana Purchase Exposition of 1903, harbor legislation that would affect the Missouri River, and Broadhead's articles on early Missouri settlements and Indian traces.
The Miscellaneous Series is arranged by type of material into articles, notes, poetry, and miscellaneous fragments. A bibliography of Carr's articles is located in folder 16. Handwritten articles included in this series deal with such topics as early settlements in Missouri, the location of the Missouri state capital, and water resources in Missouri. Geological and mineralogical notes taken at various locations around Missouri include depth and size of deposits and formations in Archer, Columbia, Jefferson City, Kansas City, and Palmyra, Missouri; as well as Leavenworth City and Olathe, Kansas. There is a folder of notes taken from articles appearing in the Columbia Herald and Columbia Statesman, c.1876. Also included are poems by Lydia Laura Carr, a cousin of Broadhead.
The Scrapbooks contain newspaper clippings taken from newspapers in Columbia, St. Louis, Chicago, New York, and Texas. Topics include the death of Jesse James and the arrest and trial of his brother Frank James, Indians in Missouri and Texas, the Civil War, social and political histories of St. Charles and St. Louis, and prominent business and scientific leaders in Missouri.
The researcher should be aware of a large amount of similar materials in the Francis Asbury Sampson Papers, Collection No. 3813.
