BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH

William Joel Stone was born in Madison County, Kentucky, on 7 May 1848, the son of William and Mildred Phelps Stone. He graduated from the University of Missouri in 1867, studied law from 1867 to 1869, and was admitted to the bar in 1869. He moved to Nevada, Missouri, in 1870 and served as prosecuting attorney of Vernon County in 1873 and 1874. In 1884, Stone, a Democrat, was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives; he remained a member until 1891. He served as governor of Missouri from 1893 until 1897 and was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1902, where he remained until his death in 1918.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The limited correspondence in this collection offers an incomplete picture of Stone's professional and personal life. Topics mentioned include Stone's early financial and real estate investments, his interest in Indian enrollments and sale of Indian lands, the 1908 senatorial race, appointment of his son to the federal bench, federal appointments, and the Armed Neutrality Bill of 1917. There is little material pertaining to Stone's gubernatorial term. Newsclippings, an obituary file, and letters of sympathy received at his death provide extensive coverage of his career.
