The Rich diaries were donated to the University of Missouri by Mary Rich Montgomery on September 27, 1949 (Accession No. 3057).
BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH
John A. Rich was born in Liberty, Missouri, on July 12, 1855, to George W. Rich and Susan Ann Roberts Rich. He graduated from Central College, Fayette, Missouri, and began his career as a seminary teacher. He was admitted to the
Missouri Bar in 1878 and the following year he started a law practice in Slater, Missouri. On August 23, 1882, Rich married Jennie L. Reynolds, and they had three children: Homer, Mary, and Lula. In 1898 he was elected as judge of the
Fifteenth Judicial Circuit Criminal Court, a position he would hold until 1921. Rich died on April 28, 1944, and was buried in Slater, Missouri.
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
The John A. Rich Diaries consist of four volumes spanning 1884-1892 and 1913-1943. The early volumes contain extensive daily entries detailing Rich's family life and law practice, church meetings, court cases, politics, illness, crime, deaths, and events in Slater, Missouri. Many of the entries include Rich's personal feelings for family and his struggle to build a successful law practice. The entries for the later volumes are shorter in length, but still contain details of Rich's personal life, career, and national events.
