INTRODUCTION

Written by a Confederate soldier during Sherman’s March to the Sea, to his sister in Williamsburg, Missouri. Also included is a 1913 letter to Jesse Maughs of Fulton, Missouri, enclosing Everhart’s letter.

DONOR INFORMATION

The Jesse Everhart Letter was donated to the State Historical Society of Missouri by Jessamine Maughs Fulton, Sidney B. Maughs, and Mrs. Curtiss Maughs on 24 February 1976 (SHS Accession No. 1193).

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

Jesse Everhart wrote to his sister Sue on 6 August 1864, from Atlanta, Georgia. For three months since his battery had left Dalton they had "been marching, fighting, and bivouaced [sic] in line of battle . . . in fact our battery has not been since we left 12 hours at a time out of site [sic] of the enem. . .."

Everhart speaks of friends he is with, feels that the battles going on in Virginia and Georgia will affect the presidential election in November and the outcome of the war, and berates "the kidglove featherbed soldiery of that state [Missouri], if they had turned out as they should things would have been quite different today."

The Everhart letter was sent to Jesse Maughs, Fulton, Missouri, from J. Woodlan, Ft. Worth, Texas, Sue’s husband, in 1913. Since Jesse Maughs was Jesse Everhart’s namesake, Woodlan thought he might like the letter.
