INTRODUCTION
The papers of Phineas Eldredge, a ship captain from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, consist of a letterbook and a c. 1795 bulletin entitled, “An Act for Incorporating the Society, Formed for the Relief of Poor, Aged, and Infirmed Masters of Ships, Their Widows and Children.”
DONOR INFORMATION
The Eldredge Papers were donated to the University of Missouri by James P. Gavin on 5 February 1953 (Accession No. 3114).
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
The letterbook is comprised of Eldredge's personal and professional correspondence for 1791 through 1826. Most of the correspondence is addressed to ship and freight owners and pertains to materials aboard vessels commanded by Eldredge. Many of the letters are postmarked from ports throughout the United States and Europe. Also included in the volume are several detailed ship accounts.
Much of the personal correspondence is to Eldridge's brother, Killey, a ship captain in New Bedford, Massachusetts, and covers both family affairs and business transactions. The letters mention various disease outbreaks in Philadelphia and the general health and well being of the family. Several letters contain information on real estate dealings and estate settlements.
There is little information on Eldredge's background or family, other then the brief notations in the letters to his brother.
