BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH

Daniel Benjamin Cleghorn was born January 27, 1827, probably at Masonville, New York, where the family lived for many years. Letters within the collection indicate that he arrived in Madison, Wisconsin, in 1851. He married Lucinda Clementina Welling of Black Earth, Wisconsin on October 13, 1857.

There are letters of introduction, written at Madison, Wisconsin, in 1854, addressed to people in California, stating that he was leaving for that state to make his future home. An April 1858 deed to property in McGregor, Iowa, and receipts show that he was there in 1857 and 1858. He ran a lumber mill and yard there through the late 1850s. The mill and yard burned in late 1859 or early 1860.

Pension papers show that he served in Company L., 3rd Regiment, Wisconsin Cavalry, from January 31, 1862, till 1865. He was stationed afterward at Fort Scott, Kansas, and his wife joined him there. Their eldest child, Mary Helen was born there October 14, 1865. Harriet Nina, the second daughter, was born at Black Earth, Wisconsin June 23, 1867. But they evidently continued to make their home at Ft. Scott, for Daniel Oliver was born there October 24, 1869, and Charles Noble was born there November 11, 1871.

Daniel Benjamin Cleghorn died December 25, 1879 at Cleghorn Springs, Rapid City, South Dakota and is buried there.
