He was active in many associations and was president of the Association of Young Republicans of Missouri in 1916. He served as governor of Missouri from 1941 to 1945 and as U.S. senator from Missouri from 1945 to 1951.

In 1913 he married Hilda Hayes of St. Louis. They had two children: Ruth and John. Donnell died in 1980.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The Forrest C. Donnell Papers consist of correspondence, reports, publications, news clippings, and other material that document Donnell's term as governor of Missouri. Much of the material deals with appointments to, and the day-to-day operation of, state government. Because Donnell was governor during World War II these papers offer a good view of how the home front coped with shortages and efforts to make the most of what they had.

The papers are arranged into thirteen series:

Fuller descriptions of the series are in the Folder List that follows.
