BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH
Thomas Adams Smith was born on 10 September 1858 at "Experiment", in Saline County to Dr. Crawford Early Smith and his wife Virginia Victoria Penn, the daughter of Dr. George Penn and Sara Belle Chambers Penn of St. Louis. He was the fourth of ten children. Crawford Early Smith was a property owner and doctor in St. Louis and the son of General Thomas Adams Smith (1781-1844), a descendent of a member of the Continental Congress and a prominent Virginia family, and a governor of Virginia.
Dr. Thomas Adams Smith married Kate Howard, the daughter of prominent St. Louis merchant Colonel Williamson Pope Howard, on 12 October 1880. Smith practiced in St. Louis until the death of his father whereupon he relocated his
family to the family estate in Saline County. Besides his medical practice, Smith was a successful farmer, cattle feeder, and banker. The couple had five children: Virginia R. Crawford Early (1883-1893), William B (Albert), Mary, and Kate. Smith died 20 May 1919 in Marshall, Saline County, Missouri.
