The collection also includes correspondence between family members, wedding invitations, the Glenns' lending library circulation records, and a minute book for the Mound City G.A.R. post.
DONOR INFORMATION
The Glenn Family Papers were deposited at the University of Missouri by Lena M. Fayman, S.W. Wortham, and J. V. Crannell on 12 October 1946 (Accession No. 2875).
BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH
John H. Glenn was born in Gallia County, Ohio, on 23 May 1818. He married Jane Dupre and in 1860 they moved their family to Holt County, Missouri, where he opened Glenn Mercantile. He was elected to the Missouri House of Representatives as a Republican in 1868 and served for two years. He died in 1900.
One of his sons, George P., became an educator and moved to Jacksonville, Florida. Another son, Addison N., was born in 1839 and moved to Falls City, Nebraska, after the Civil War. There he managed a farm implement store for McKeeson & Rinker Company of Council Bluffs, Iowa.
A third son, Robert C., went into business with his father. He eventually took over the enterprise and expanded it to include a furniture store, clothing store, and drug store. He married Belle Mitchell in 1877. Belle's sister Elizabeth married John Ulysses Crosen, an educator in northern Missouri. The papers contain correspondence between the two families.
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
The Glenn Family Papers consist of business and legal records, correspondence, and miscellaneous material. They document the operations of the various businesses the Glenns owned and operated as well as documenting their social lives and family life. The records are arranged into three series:
The Business Records series contains account books, legal records, tax records, correspondence, advertising, and invoices which describe the Glenns' dealings with wholesalers, manufacturers, and bankers throughout the Midwest and the East Coast. However, the bulk of their business was done in St. Joseph, Missouri.
A large number of volumes is part of this series including two ledgers containing library circulation records and numerous daybooks, account ledgers, and sales journals detailing the Glenns' daily business operations. Another volume contains invoices pasted over
the leaves of an 1853 geography textbook. The records are arranged by type of material.
The Civic Affairs series contains records of the Glenns' donations of money and materials for the new Presbyterian Church in Mound City and records concerning Addison Glenns' association with the Mound City Grand Army of the Republic post and Robert Glenns' affiliation with the Odd Fellows lodge. These records are arranged by topic.
The Personal Papers series includes correspondence, invitations and announcements, a diary, two photographs, and miscellaneous items belonging to various members of the Glenn family. Most of the records in this series consist of correspondence written from 1871 through 1930 between Belle Glenn and her sister Elizabeth's family and between Robert Glenn and his brother George. This series also includes a diary written by Bella Mitchell in the year prior to her marriage to Robert Glenn. There are numerous invitations and announcements which would be interesting to those examining the rituals involved in wedding and graduation ceremonies during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This series is arranged by type of material.
