INTRODUCTION

The business records of a Gordonville, Missouri, drygoods store, which grew into a general merchandise and farm service operation, follow this family-owned business from Vicksburg, Mississippi, through its move to Cape Girardeau County in 1840 and trace its development there into the 1970s.

DONOR INFORMATION

The Macke Store records were donated to the University of Missouri by Dorothy Probst Macke on 11 January 1973 (Accession No. 3906). An addition to the records was made by Macke on 14 November 1977 (Accession No. 4122).

ORGANIZATIONAL SKETCH

Samuel Gordon started a mercantile business in Vicksburg, Mississippi. In 1840 Gordon moved his operations to Cape Girardeau County, Missouri, where he founded the town of Gordonville. His Gordonville store was sold to the Keerstner family later in the century. They in turn sold the store building to Henry W. Macke, c. 1900. The latter already operated the Gordonville Mercantile Company established by his grandfather, Henry Ahrens.

After Henry W. Macke’s death in 1928 the business passed into the hands of his son Albert H. Macke who operated it as the Macke Store. Albert Macke expanded the firm’s operations, establishing the Macke Farm Service and adding a dairy route as well as the area’s first mobile feed grinders. Following Albert Macke’s death in 1957, his wife Dorothy Probst Macke and son Henry Weldon Macke continued to operate the store. In 1961 the business was incorporated as a family corporation with the main store in Gordonville and a branch in Cape Girardeau. This corporation was dissolved in 1972/73 and its interests sold to Roy Brown of Gordonville.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The Macke Store Records consist of accounts, invoices, banking records, inventories, payroll records, and account books that reflect the running of a store. The records are arranged by type of record. Records from 1835 to 1932 are mostly in the form of accounting books (ledgers, journals, etc.), as are those for 1957 to 1972. The years for which there are no accounting records are represented by cancelled checks, invoices, and sales receipts.
