Internships

Introduction

The State Historical Society of Missouri is pleased to provide learning opportunities to students through its Internship Program. Interns will be matched with SHSMO staff and given the chance to explore a variety of Society operations.

Internship opportunities are limited and are therefore filled based on availability.

Archive and Library Intern/Practicum

Location: Cape Girardeau, Columbia, Kansas City, Rolla, St. Louis, or Springfield

Description: The Archives and Library intern will gain hands-on experience in processing, cataloging, digitizing, and learning preservation methods for small- to medium-size archival collections.

This opportunity is available to a limited number of students pursuing a history or library science degree with a concentration or interest in archival studies/preservation. An internship/practicum requiring specific criteria for credit can be accommodated.

Archive and library internships are offered at the State Historical Society Research Centers in Cape Girardeau, Columbia, Kansas City, Rolla, St. Louis, and Springfield. Art Intern

Location: Columbia

Description: The art intern will work with the art department on a variety of projects and events, including processing art collections, preparing exhibitions, and assisting in art-related events. In this role, the intern will:

Art internships are offered during the spring and fall semesters at the Columbia Research Center only. The position is on-site and unpaid. Interns will receive a one-year complimentary student membership to the State Historical Society of Missouri.

Education Outreach Intern

Location: Columbia

Description: The education outreach intern will work with the education team on a variety of initiatives and events, including the National History Day in Missouri program, the Hands-On History program, and the Bicentennial celebration. In this role, the intern will:

Oral History Intern

Location: Columbia

Description: The Oral History intern will gain hands-on experience in all aspects of the oral history process. Interns will learn how to research, write questions, and conduct their own oral history interview to complete their internship. Interns will work on processing interviews and helping to create interview transcripts and summaries. Topics include, but are not limited to the environment, one-room schoolhouses, veterans, politics, and artists to name a few ongoing projects.

This opportunity is available to a limited number of students pursuing a history degree. An internship requiring specific criteria for credit can be accommodated.

Preservation Intern

Description: The preservation intern will assist the conservator with various projects in the conservation lab ranging from making custom boxes to performing a condition survey on a large collection of documents. The intern will gain experience preserving historical collections by:
